New Years day begins the year & is the first holiday.

In Belgium, it is the day for giving & receiving gifts.
It is also a day for visiting Family & Friends to wish a Bonne Annee /Happy New Year.
The visits would be short as there are many homes to visit.
At each home you would be served something, such as a cup of coffee, demitasse, wine or alcoholic beverage. Many times Waffles, Belgian Pie, cakes or even a light meal would be served, like Breads, Cheeses, Cold Meat & Fruit.

In Wisconsin, it is a common custom to attend a church mass & then have a Family & Friends get together to share a meal & this meal would be almost identical to the way of the people from Belgium. A personal favorite tradition in my memory is the serving of Galettes ( I know you all have heard it before) but it just wouldn’t be New Years Day without them.
Which is pre-made waffles served with warmed milk cinnamon & sugar.

This year I want to research further back into our history. All assistance will be most appreciated. And thanks always to dear, dear Jeanne Fameree who sends a monthly virtual family reunion.

At the turn of the seventeenth century, my--our--great-great-great-great-great-great-grandfather was born in the region of the Ourthe [Dept. de l’Ourthe]. I believe this is the area of southeastern Belgium where we can find most information. He later settled further north in Longueville close to where Freddy and Annie Fammerée now live.

[His older brother Jean-Baptiste (b. 1 April, 1810) homesteaded in Wisconsin in a small Township called Red River and settled on the Fameree land which is still in the Jeanne’s family. In 1859 the 40 acres they settled on was deeded to them by the Sate of Wisconsin & the deed was signed by President Buchanan.This is how we are related to all cousins in Wisconsin.]

[My great-grandfather settled in Chicago in the late 1870s. A portrait of him drawn just prior to his voyage to America hangs above our fire place. His older brother Eugène remained in Belgium. His great-grandson is Frédéric Fammerée.. A younger brother Noel (b. 14 February 1858) settled in St. Louis. Guy Fammerée Bates, a cousin who now lives in Arizona, is his great-grandson.. A sister Adèle (b. 7 October, 1853), my daughter’s namesake, married Léopold Rigot. Their great-grandchildren are our Rigot cousins living in and around Brussels.]

Longueville

Conspicuous as a sonnet, I pass through
shadows. I do not know their names and
I decide not to count. There are so many
going up the hill and back, alongside the
vein of meadowsweet and loam. They are
a forest. They are a frost. I am their field.
Each ancestor rising one summer higher
in a line, planted along the rutted road
which is now a footpath for fewer and
fewer.

It was a Roman lane, their tomb a mound
sprouting yew and laurel, pregnant two
thousand years. They return to recall as do
their descendants, my ancestors. One day,
my daughter will come here and tell this
story to her grandchildren, and they will
sit within my shade and shiver with
mysteries as she, three months old today,
looks up my tall, deciduous body into
leaves.
